Day 2
Sat 12/7/08 Reims to Freiburg, Germany (365 miles)
| The day starts by carving though a nearby national park and on to some remote roads in the Picardy region before taking in some of the glorious routes of the Champagne Ardennes region to guide us across Northern France |
 |
By late afternoon we’ll indulge is some wonderful mountain driving in the French Alsace region before crossing the border into Germany to spend the evening in our remotely hotel on the borders of the Black
Forest.
Our 4* hotel for the evening is located on the outskirts of Freiburg and enjoys fantastic panoramic views of the city skyline. The hotel has two restaurants and an indoor pool all enjoying that same spectacular view.
We’ve booked the accommodation on a B&B basis and have reserved rooms on a higher level of the hotel as they benefit from superior views.
Day 3
Sun 13/7/08 Freiburg to St. Moritz, Switzerland (290 miles)
 |
Digest your breakfast well as
within 5 miles of the hotel the
route launches into some
spectacular twisting wooded
sections of the southern Black
Forest - this scenery is strictly
for the passenger to enjoy! |
By mid morning we’ll cross into Switzerland then clear some mileage to take us into the heart of the Alps. We drive the glorious St. Gotthard Pass before heading over the route used in the original Italian Job film.
By late afternoon we’ll use one of our favourite roads to guide us into the world famous St. Moritz.
For our two evenings here, we’ve selected an imposing 5* hotel which is one of the most famous in the area. It houses a most impressive casino and of course enjoys all those other facilities expected of such a highly ranked hotel including various restaurants and bars, full wellness facilities including a heated pool, sauna and gym and of course secure indoor parking. You’ll enjoy it here!
Day 4
Mon 14/7/08 Rest Day – Optional Drive – Stelvio (135 miles)
| We took in the glorious Stelvio pass in northern Italy on the 2006
Swiss Alps tour but for those who loved it that much, here’s another opportunity. |
 |
If you’ve never experienced it then you’d be advised to spend half of your “rest day” and tackle the most famous pass of them
all.
For those who elect to keep the car parked for the day, St. Moritz has plenty to offer. Sitting at over 5,600 feet above sea level, this elegant resort offers shops galore, excellent restaurants and various site seeing opportunities including mountain railways and cable cars to take a bird’s eye view of this stunning
location.
Tonight will be our second and final night in St. Moritz. Again the hotel is booked on a B&B basis. If you didn’t try it the night before, maybe you’ll take your chances in the hotel casino.
Day 5
Tue 15/7/08 St. Moritz to Cortina, Italy (210 miles)
 |
What a wonderful day of driving
today! Leaving St. Moritz behind
us we embark on a lovely
morning drive carving our way
through the Swiss Alps. |
By mid morning we’ll be winding our way through the Italian Alps. The roads are fantastic fun here and the scenery
stunning!
The afternoon journey will see us launching into the highly challenging roads of the glorious Italian Dolomites. One of nature’s greatest treasures the dramatic landscapes of the Dolomites are quite different to any other area of the Alps.
The route at the end of the day is a sequence of what seems like never ending hairpin bends, steep gradients with varying cambers. Drive this route well and it will reward you with a drive you won’t forget in a hurry.
The excitement draws to a close in a beautiful town known as the “Queen of the Alps”. Cortina, nestled in the palm of the dramatic Italian dolomites is one of the most exclusive destinations in the alps and is proudly listed along with only a handful of towns bestowed with the “Best of the Alps” classification.

We’ve chosen yet another lovely 5* hotel to spend the evening which we’ve booked on a B&B basis. Packed with character, this charming hotel will prove a very nice place to rest up after a full day of high concentration driving. It has a wonderful indoor heated pool enjoying panoramic views over Cortina’s spectacular Five Towers (a rock formation if you’re wondering!). It also has a very nice restaurant and bar area.

There are also many places to eat in Cortina should you decide to venture away from the hotel.
Day 6
Wed 16/7/08 – Cortina to Lindau, Germany (245 miles)
Our day starts with another epic drive completing the journey through the awe inspiring landscape of the towering Dolomites.

This will undoubtedly be a region you’ll long to return to one day. |
 |
The fun doesn’t stop there either as we’ll spend most of the day snaking through some of the best passes in the Austrian Tyrol.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our stunning 4* hotel nestled on the shores of Lake Constance in Germany. This imposing 4* star luxury hotel enjoys a premium lake side position with a glorious Alpine backdrop and has a magnificent lake side pool area. It has an excellent restaurant and if the whether is on our side then you’re likely to enjoy your evening meal on the outside terrace overlooking Lake Constance.

Alternatively you may decide to take a short trip over to the old Island of Lindau where there are plenty of sights to see and excellent
restaurants.

We’ve booked the hotel on a B&B basis and reserved private garages for all the cars.
Day 7
Thu 17/7/08 Lindau to Baden Baden, Germany (180 miles)
 |
Today is a relatively short drive
so you can either leave with us
at the usual time to get to our
destination by mid afternoon, or
hold back and enjoy our lake side
hotel for a little longer. |
The drive starts off in relax mode as we skirt the shores of Lake Constance.

Later things change, quite drastically, as we revisit those twisting ribbons of tarmac found in Germany’s Black Forest. From South to North on all new roads from our journey through here on day 3, this is a wonderful drive through one of the nicest regions of
Germany.

We’ll have lunch in a traditional town (kuku clock heaven if that’s your thing!), or if it’s too busy we know of a couple of remotely located restaurants with masses of
parking.

We’ll then embark on the final leg of our adventure through this wonderful region before descending on our hotel by mid afternoon located in the capital of the Black Forest, Baden
Baden.

An affluent city void of intimidation often found in larger cities, Baden Baden is one of our favourite cities and a great place to spend the last evening of the
tour.

Our hotel is located just a stones throw away from the centre of this wonderful city and we’d strongly recommend you take the time to have a wonder around. If you got the bug in St, Moritz, then there’s the famous Baden Baden casino only a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Of course, the hotel has its own excellent restaurants and bar but there are also many restaurants, cafes and bars nearby so you’ll be spoilt for choice as to how to spend your final evening wining and
dining.

Our hotel is a superior 4* which we’ve booked on a B&B basis and reserved underground, secure parking for all the cars. It is set within its own magnificent grounds, has the ONLY indoor and outdoor thermal pools in Baden Baden as well as a sauna, steam-bath and massage programmes which you can book in advance should you choose to have the full pampering treatment prior to our journey home the following day.
Day 8
Fri 18/7/08 Black Forest to Calais, France (410 miles)
Well this is it - the journey home.

A fairly high amount of miles today but a doddle of a route.

Soon out of the Black Forest, we’ll be into eastern France and will use its efficient motorway network to guide us back to Calais. |
 |
We’ll use our usual spot to stop for some lunch and for those who haven’t visited it, the old Grand Prix pits are just around the corner should you want to get some photos. After lunch we’ll head north to catch our afternoon Eurotunnel crossing back to
Folkestone.

Upon arriving back in the England we’ll bid farewell as we all slip back into the grim reality of driving on our less than inspiring motorway network to lead us all home. Until next time……
